How to achieve glowy skin!

glowy skin

A major component of healthy skin is a natural glow. But let’s be real: achieving that glowy, flawless look isn’t always easy. Lack of sleep, stress, age, and even what you eat can rob your complexion of its radiance. The journey to glowing, radiant skin can take time, but with the right tips and tricks, you can achieve a flawless complexion, no matter your skin’s current condition.

There’s much more to achieving glowy skin than using the right products (although, this does play a huge part in it). It’s just as much about what you put in your body as what you put on it. Like most skincare-related goals, achieving glowy skin isn’t going to happen overnight. So, if you decide that you’re going to put all of your efforts into making your skin glow, try not to be discouraged if you don’t see results straight away.

What is glowy skin?

First and foremost, what is glowy skin?

Glowing skin is skin that can be categorized as shiny and ‘glows’. Skin can become dull when rough, dead skin cells pile up so, glowy skin is free of these.

How do you achieve glowy skin?

So how exactly do you go about getting that glowy skin? And what can you do to ensure that it stays that way? We’ve put together our top 10 steps to help you achieve glowy-looking, smooth skin!

Drink plenty of water

water

This is such an important step!

The better your body feels, the more resilient it will be against stress and the elements. Healthy skin starts from the inside out and drinking water will keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

We recommend drinking at least two litres of water a day. If you can, also try and skip the caffeine. It’s a mild diuretic that causes water loss and can cause dehydration.

Eat antioxidant-rich food

Much like water can have an effect on your skin, what you eat can also play a huge part in achieving glowy skin. Try and load up on grapes, berries and nuts such as pecans and walnuts, these are all rich in polyphenols such as ellagic acid and resveratrol. A diet high in vitamin C will also help keep acne at bay.

Get enough sleep

Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night and avoid caffeine before bedtime.

This can make your skin feel dry and tight when you wake up in the morning (and who wants that?). Getting enough sleep will give your skin time to heal and repair, growing fresh new skin cells, an important component of having glowy skin.

Use an exfoliant

Use an exfoliant at least once per week to keep dead skin cells from clogging pores (and causing breakouts).

If you have sensitive skin, try an enzyme-based product instead of something with physical beads that can irritate the delicate skin around your eyes or mouth area where blood vessels are closer.

Up your face mask game

These are incredibly easy to incorporate into your skincare routine and can make the world of difference.

Simply pop one on whilst you’re watching TV, reading a book or even working from home (just remember to take it off when you have a Zoom meeting) for instantly soft, glowy skin.

Moisturise your skin regularly

Don’t leave the moisturising routine for when your skin feels a bit dry. A lack of hydration of your skin can make your complexion appear dull and even accentuate wrinkles. We recommend moisturising day and night after you have double-cleansed your skin. Before deciding on which type of moisturiser to use you should find out your skin type

Once you have determined your skin type you can choose the right moisturiser for your skin from our selection chosen from ethical, female-led brands.

Don't forget the sunscreen!

If you take anything away from this post then make sure that it is this one. No matter the time of year your skin needs sun cream. SPF creates a barrier between your skin and the sun, protecting it from its harmful rays even if the sun is hiding behind clouds. This will keep your sun from becoming sun damaged, will prevent sun-induced wrinkles and will prevent it from drying out.

Regularly applying sun cream to your skin reduces overall exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, which lowers your risk of skin cancer and sun damage. Even when the sun is not shining, you are still at risk of exposing your skin to UV light.

Apply products on damp skin

Doing this allows the product to absorb into your skin at an accelerated rate. This is because damp skin is easier to penetrate than dry skin.

Just be careful because the same rule does not apply to retinol. Wash your face before you apply it, but, make sure your skin is dry first or it can harm your skin.

Using products with prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics

Using a skin care product that contains prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics can help boost your skin’s microbiome and give you a  healthier, glowing complexion. Prebiotics are the “fertilizer” for your skin that encourages these essential microorganisms to grow; probiotics are the microorganisms themselves; and postbiotics are the chemical byproducts of bacteria and fragments of dead bacterial cells that remain on the skin. Incorporating these into your skincare can help boost the regeneration of cells and help keep your skin healthy, which in turn will give you the glowy complexion that you are after.

Always remember that your skin is unique. What might work for one person won’t necessarily work for the next and so on. Our skin is also constantly changing with the seasons, our age and our surroundings. What might have worked for you last summer won’t necessarily work for you this winter. Keep adapting, keep experimenting and keep trying to find what works for you!
